The tradition of mystery, thrill and detective novels has a long trail in Bengali literature. Priyonath Mukhopadhyay wrote ‘Darogar Daptar’ (The Office of the Police Inspector) in the late nineteenth century. From the very beginning, slowly with the passage of time, Bengali mystery novels attained adulthood. This novel initiative has been taken to compile that traditional trend in three volumes. The first volume contains fifteen best mystery novels selected by the editor. It includes the works of eminent writers like Priyonath Mukhopadhyay. The second volume contains thirteen best mystery novels selected by the editor. It includes the works of distinguished writers begining with Nihar Ranjan Gupta, Pranab Roy. Bimal Kar, Satyajit Ray, Samaresh Basu, Nirendranath Chakraborty, Syed Mustafa Siraj to Sukhamoy Mukhopadhyay, Bimal Saha and others. An avid reader of mystery novels and of distinguished mystery-writer himself, Anish Deb has edited this classic book with intent devotion and care.
