প্রতিভা যদি স্রষ্টার কলমের ডগায় বিরাজ করে তবে সেই স্রষ্টার সৃষ্টি কখনোই একটি মাত্র চরিত্রে সীমাবদ্ধ হতে পারে না। এমনি এক প্রতিভা হলেন আর্থার কন্যান ডয়েল। একথা ঠিকই যে তাঁর সৃষ্ট জগৎ বিখ্যাত গোয়েন্দা চরিত্র শার্লক হোমস তাঁকে নিয়ে গেছে খ্যাতির শির্ষে। কিন্তু আর্থার কন্যান ডয়াল ছিলেন অত্যন্ত পরিশ্রমী ও প্রাণবন্ত। তাই তিনি শুধুমাত্র শার্লক হোমস সৃষ্টি করেই শান্ত থাকেন নি। বলা চলে শান্ত থাকতে পারেননি। বেশ কিছু চমকপ্রদ ঠাসবুনুনি কাহিনী রচনা করে গেছিলেন। লিখেছেন লষ্ট ওয়ার্ল্ড, পয়জন বেল্ট এর মতো অ্যাডভেঞ্চারের কাহিনী । লিখেছেন প্রেততত্ত্ববাদ ইতিহাস যে বিষয়ে উনি নিজেই উত্তোরত্তর আগ্রহী হয়ে উঠেছিলেন। ল্যান্ড অফ মিস্ট এর মতো ভয়ালভয়ঙ্কর উপন্যাস ও রচিত হয়েছে তাঁর কলম থেকে।
স্যার আর্থার কন্যান ডয়াল সৃষ্ট চরিত্রদের প্রথম সারিতে রয়েছে প্রফেসর জর্জ চ্যালেঞ্জার,শার্লক হোমস এবং ডক্টর ওয়াটসন।
শার্লক হোমস এর সাথে আপামোর বইপ্রেমী পরিচিত হলেও প্রফেসরের সাথে হয়ত পরিচয় সবার অতটা নেই। প্রফেসর চ্যালেঞ্জার — ডয়াল সৃষ্ট এই রুক্ষ কিন্তু সরল, দুর্দান্ত অথচ স্নেহপরায়ণ, ভয়ংকর উগ্র অথচ পরম কৌতুকপ্রিয় বিজ্ঞানীটি তার অভিযান প্রিয় মনকে সন্তুষ্ট করতে বার বার ছুটে গেছেন অজানার উদ্দ্যেশে,অদেখাকে জয় করতে। কখনো তিনি পাড়ি দিয়েছেন অ্যামাজনের জঙ্গলে প্রাগৈতিহাসিক প্রাণীর খোঁজে, আবার কখনো তার অভিযাত্রীদলের সাথে মোলাকাত হয়েছে বনমানুষদের। আর কাহিনীর বুনট এবং চরিত্রায়ন পাঠককেও করেছে প্রফেসরের অভিযানের সঙ্গী।
একদা এক আমেরিকান ইউনিভার্সিটি সত্যিই অভিযান পাঠিয়েছিল ‘লস্ট ওয়ার্ল্ড’ আবিষ্কার করার জন্যে!এটা কিন্ত্ত একটা ঘটনা —কল্পনা নয়। চ্যালেঞ্জারের অ্যাডভেঞ্চার কাহিনির সঙ্গে এইচ জি ওয়েলসের সায়েন্টিফিক নভেলের সাদৃশ্য আছে কোথাও না কোথাও —বর্তমান যুগে এই সাহিত্যকেই বলা হচ্ছে সায়েন্স -ফিকশন। গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কয়েকটা পার্থক্যও আছে। ডয়ালের চ্যালেঞ্জার কাহিনি নিরেট বৈজ্ঞানিক ঘটনাভিত্তিক—সম্ভবনাভিত্তিক নয়। পাকা গল্পকারের মতো তাঁর কল্পনা এবং শ্বাসরোধী উৎকণ্ঠা পাঠকপাঠিকাদের নিবিষ্ট করে রাখে ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা। গল্প বলার ঝোঁকে গল্পের গোরুকে গাছে উঠতে দেন না কক্ষনো—শক্ত যুক্তি আর নিটোল চরিত্রায়ন বিস্মৃত হন না একবারও।
