The aim of the horror story is to throw people into that extreme, primitive helpless situation by moving around in the branches of occult, supernatural, environmental, gore, gothic. But the internal signal is the same. Deviation from what is normal is fear. The miracle stories written by Pia Sarkar in the last five years are somewhat like this.
