‘মা’ শব্দের একটি অপ্রচলিত অর্থভাব ‘পরিমাপ করা’। শিবের যিনি পরিমাপক অর্থাৎ যাঁহার ভিতর দিয়া অপরিমেয় শিব সৃষ্টি প্রপঞ্চরূপে পরিমিত হন সেই শক্তিরূপিণী হইলেন উমা। উমা শিবের শক্তি, সেই অমিতশক্তির নিয়ন্ত্রক। মাতা উমা পার্বতী, দক্ষকন্যা সতী, দুর্গা, চণ্ডিকা প্রভৃতি বিবিধ নামাঙ্কিতা। একপ্রকারে মহাদেবী বা মহামায়া। মহাদেবী রূপ বদলে কালিকা বা কালী। আর সেই ধারাতেই শ্যামা। আদতে সবই শক্তি, আদিশক্তি বা আদ্যাশক্তি।

মা কালীকে নিয়ে বিবিধ গ্রন্থ, তত্ত্বসার ও ক্ষেত্রসমীক্ষা রয়েছে। মা কালী বাঙালির প্রাণ ও সংস্কৃতিতে তিরতির করে বয়ে চলা অপারবিসারী নদী। তাতে মহার্ঘ্য প্রস্তরখণ্ড থেকে দুই পাড়ের মাটি সবই এসে পলি হয়ে মিশেছে। রাজা, উজির, সাধক, ভিখারি, অজস্র রচয়িতা, অজস্র পদ, অজস্র সুর সবই মায়ের নামেই উৎসর্গীকৃত। ‘কালী কথা’ সেখানেই আরেকটি নতুন সংযোজন।
